Second excavation campaign in Santa Criz de Eslava (1996)

1996

Again with a grant from the Government of Navarra, the same team composed of the three archaeologists Pilar Sáez de Albéniz, Rosa Armendáriz and Txaro Mateo, and two workers, continued with the archaeological intervention. The second excavation campaign took place between May 24 and June 30 and in the month of December. The work was concentrated in the necropolis, on the hillside and in the western part of it, next to the access road. In the necropolis, a third funerary enclosure and several open-air tombs were discovered, as well as a sculptural remains and a fragment of inscription. On the hillside, a test pit was planned around two ashlars and structural remains and construction material of great scientific and artistic value were found. In the western part of the enclave, the structures fortuitously exhumed by the construction of the agricultural road were cleaned, including several sections of wall that partially define rooms and the remains of a possible thermal bath.
